Dear Customer,
Since our
launch in October last year, response to our
biodegradable range of food containers has been
phenomenal! It certainly was an inspiring way to end the
year and we look forward to an even greener 2008! This
is the first of our regular newsletters which will help
to keep you in the Green Home loop about developments as
well as debates and issues in the new, exciting area of
biodegradable packaging.

Green Home
Highlights |
Green Home is expanding! To meet the growing
demand for biodegradable packaging in South Africa,
we have converted from a
closed corporation to a private company. Green
Home Pty Ltd has been born at a fundamental time in
South Africa - a time when biodegradable is being
transformed from a product to into a movement.
Biodegradable packaging has swept countries
internationally and according to our research; South
Africa is a market that is ready to take off.
The vision
of Green Home is to lead South Africa's biodegradable
movement as part of an environmental transformation of
the food packaging industry, empowered and directed by
South African women. We are particularly pleased to
announce that Grace Stead, Thabelo Moji, Helen Hoekstra
and Juanita Stead of Women Holding Investment Power
(WHIP) have come on board as shareholders; as well
as Raffaella Delle Donne, Lewis Nieburg, Valerie Morris
and Timothy
George. |
| Consumer trends and
attitudes towards packaging |
An
online Nielsen Global Food Packaging Survey has revealed
that nearly one in two global consumers would give up
all forms of packaging provided for convenience purposes
if it would benefit the environment. 60% of South
African consumers said they were willing to give up
unnecessary, convenience packaging for environmental
reasons. This means that South Africa appeared in top 10
list of countries who would give up all forms of
packaging for convenience purposes. According to the
European Bioplastics Association, 200 million tonnes of
plastics are produced each year, accounting for around
five per cent of all crude oil
consumption.

| Corn and the GM debate
|
As
some of our products are made from corn, customers,
including The Ethical Co-op expressed concerns about
whether or not our products are GM free. Given our
personal involvement in environmental activism, we share
those concerns over the GM issue when it comes to
biodegradable alternatives to petroleum- based plastics
and Green Home is passionate about promoting
biodegradable alternatives that are ethically produced
and GM-free.

| Is
this the end of the road for plastic?
|
|
If global trends around the world are anything to
by, it seems that the plastic industry's days are
numbered. Major cities like San Francisco, Hong Kong,
Paris and Melbourne have already kick-started the
biodegradable revolution, last year, by banning all
plastic shopping bags. read

| Plastic/fuel versus food - is
there enough for both? |
Just about every magazine today is offering tips
on how to live a more "eco-friendly" lifestyle and you
can hardly open a newspaper without a reference to the
impact of global warming. Even our Finance Minister,
Trevor Manuel, has been heard uttering the word "green"
when it comes to the national budget. So, it should come
as no surprise that that consumer demand for a
biodegradable alternative to plastic is becoming hard to
ignore.

In
the Media
|
|
Over the last few months Green Home has attracted
a lot of media attention. Articles about Green Home have
been featured in newspapers such as the Cape Times and The Swazi Observer, and phone calls
have been pouring in from magazines like House &
Leisure, Elle and Ideas
who want to feature our products - a clear sign of how
eco-conscious South African consumers are becoming.
At the end of last year, Green Home was invited
to be part of the City of Cape Town's Smart Living
Exhibition as well as the Promoting Renewable Energy
Africa(PREA) workshop. Undoubtedly, a big shout out must
go to Constantia Waldorf who put on Acoustic Earth in February this year,
a music festival that used only biodegradable,
disposable take-away containers!
